Pegula Stuns Krejcikova to Reach US Open 2025 Semi-Finals
‘Never Thought I’d Be Good at This’ – Pegula Cruises into US Open 2025 Semi-Finals
Jessica Pegula is into the semi-finals of the US Open 2025 after dispatching former world number two Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets, 6-3 6-3, at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
The American fourth seed will now face either defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or Marketa Vondrousova for a place in the final. Pegula, who reached the last four in New York for the second consecutive year, has yet to drop a set in the tournament.
“Ten years ago I never thought I’d be good at this – but I guess I am,” said Pegula with a smile after her emphatic win.
Dominant Pegula Finds Form at the Perfect Time
Pegula came into Flushing Meadows in modest form, having won just two matches across her last four tournaments and suffering early exits in four of her last six Grand Slam appearances.
However, she has rediscovered her rhythm on home soil, storming past Mayar Sharif, Anna Blinkova, Victoria Azarenka, and Ann Li before overcoming Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion.
“I feel really comfortable. It’s crazy to feel this comfortable on the biggest court in the world with the craziest crowd and the best players,” she told Sky Sports.
How the Match Unfolded: Pegula vs Krejcikova
Krejcikova, who staged a remarkable comeback in the previous round saving eight match points against Taylor Townsend, struggled from the outset against a clinical Pegula.
The American broke to love in the second game and raced to a 3-0 lead, controlling the tempo with deep groundstrokes and aggressive net play. Despite Krejcikova closing the gap to 4-3, a costly double fault handed Pegula another break to seal the set.
In the second, Krejcikova’s serving woes continued. She committed two double faults in the opening game, gifting Pegula an early break. Though she fought back from 1-4 to 3-4, her seventh double fault on match point summed up a disappointing performance.
Pegula hit 21 winners, dominated on first serve, and won 69% of her net points, showcasing not only power but tactical precision.
What’s Next for Pegula?
Pegula now waits to see if she will face Aryna Sabalenka or Marketa Vondrousova in the semi-finals. A potential clash with Sabalenka would be a repeat of their US Open showdown last year.
“I’ve been playing some really solid tennis and having good starts,” Pegula said. “She had some great returns when I was up 4-1, and we all saw what she did against Taylor, so I’m happy we’re done.”
With the crowd firmly behind her and confidence peaking, Pegula is now two wins away from her first Grand Slam title.
