Aitana Bonmati Makes History with Third Ballon d’Or Feminin

Aitana Bonmati Wins Record Third Ballon d’Or Feminin

Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has made football history by winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or Feminin, becoming the first-ever player to win the women’s award three times.

The 27-year-old overcame viral meningitis just days before Euro 2025 to inspire her national team to the final and was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic treble and Champions League final run.

Bonmati previously won the award in 2023 and 2024, continuing a five-year streak for Barcelona players after Alexia Putellas claimed the honour in 2021 and 2022.

A Year of Heroism, Grit, and Glory

Bonmati’s season was far from routine. Hospitalised just before the Euros, her tournament was in doubt — but she returned to score the match-winner against Germany in extra time of the semi-final.

Though Spain fell to England on penalties in the final, her contribution was vital in taking La Roja to their first-ever UEFA Women’s Euro final.

For Barcelona:

  • 12 goals and 6 assists in Liga F

  • Helped Barca finish eight points clear of Real Madrid

  • Starred in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the final

  • 9 goal contributions in 11 UCL matches

  • Named Champions League Player of the Season by UEFA

Hampton, Wiegman Also Honoured

  • Hannah Hampton (Chelsea & England) was named Best Women’s Goalkeeper, capping off a breakout year.

  • Sarina Wiegman, England’s head coach, was awarded Women’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Lionesses to Euro 2025 glory.

Why Bonmati’s Third Win Matters

Bonmati has rewritten the standards for consistency and impact in women’s football. From overcoming illness to being the difference-maker in clutch moments, her story is one of talent, resilience, and legacy.

At just 27, the Barcelona maestro could yet extend her Ballon d’Or reign, having now become a living legend in the sport.
