Chelsea’s Marc Guiu Eligible for EFL Cup Despite Sunderland Stint
Guiu Cleared to Play Against Lincoln After Rule Confusion
Chelsea’s teenage striker Marc Guiu has been cleared to play in the Carabao Cup third round against Lincoln City after a last-minute clarification from the English Football League (EFL) confirmed his eligibility under a new competition rule.
The 19-year-old Spaniard, who was briefly loaned to Sunderland, had played in the EFL Cup for the Championship club last month. Under the old rules, this would have meant Guiu was cup-tied, making him ineligible to represent Chelsea in the same tournament.
However, a 2025 rule change now permits players to represent two different clubs in the EFL Cup under specific conditions — and Guiu meets those criteria.
Rule 6.4: What Changed in the EFL Cup Regulations?
The EFL Cup rule update, introduced for the 2024–25 season, states that:
A registered player may play for up to two clubs in the same EFL Cup season if:
-
They move between clubs during the same transfer window, and
-
The move occurs before the transfer deadline or prior to the first leg of the semi-final.
Guiu began the season registered with Chelsea, was loaned to Sunderland, and then recalled due to an injury crisis at Stamford Bridge — all within the same summer window. Therefore, his return to Chelsea counts as his one permitted move, and his prior appearance for Sunderland does not disqualify him.
Chelsea had reportedly been unaware of the rule update until seeking clarification from the EFL, who confirmed his eligibility just hours before kickoff.
Injury Crisis Forces Chelsea’s Hand
Chelsea’s attacking depth has been badly hit:
-
Liam Delap is sidelined until December.
-
Nicolas Jackson has gone on loan to Bayern Munich.
-
Joao Pedro has started all six matches so far this season.
Guiu, who scored once in three appearances for Sunderland in August, could prove vital as a backup, though he was not expected to start against Lincoln.
What the Club and EFL Say
Chelsea manager Mikel Arteta (or current acting head depending on timeline) reportedly welcomed the EFL’s confirmation, ensuring that the club remains compliant with regulations.
A club spokesperson stated:
“We thank the EFL for clarifying the matter swiftly. Marc remains an important part of our plans, and we’re happy to know he can contribute moving forward.”
