Donald Hints at Third Ryder Cup Captaincy After Historic Win

Luke Donald Not Ruling Out Third Ryder Cup Captaincy

Luke Donald, now hailed as one of Europe’s greatest Ryder Cup captains, has not ruled out taking the reins for a third time in 2027 after masterminding another unforgettable victory over the United States — this time on away soil at Bethpage, New York.

The 47-year-old Englishman became only the second European captain in history (after Tony Jacklin) to win the Ryder Cup home and away.

“I’ll never rule it out,” Donald told BBC Sport, speaking from the team’s celebration hotel in Long Island. “I just want to enjoy this one for now. It was the most stressful day of my life on a golf course.”

Back-to-Back Glory: A Historic Feat

Donald took over the captaincy for Rome 2023 after Henrik Stenson was removed due to his LIV Golf involvement, and led Europe to a dominant home win.

Despite questions about whether he would return for 2025, Donald agreed — and delivered again in New York, guiding his team to a nail-biting 14½–13½ victory.

“A lot of people questioned why I would do it again. But home and away is a different challenge. I’ve ticked both boxes.”

Chants of “Two more years!” echoed through the Bethpage galleries and locker rooms, with players and fans calling for Donald to continue his reign into Adare Manor 2027.

Who Could Replace Donald?

If Donald chooses not to continue, several names are being considered:

  • Justin Rose, a key player at Bethpage

  • Edoardo or Francesco Molinari, both vice-captains

  • Other rising leaders from within the European team

“It’s like following Sir Alex Ferguson,” warned Shane Lowry. “Tough shoes to fill.”

U.S. Crowd Controversy: No Apology Yet

The event was marred by unruly fan behavior, including abuse directed at Rory McIlroy and an incident where a drink was thrown at his wife, Erica.

“We’d love to just play,” said Donald. “The US players were great in trying to quieten the crowd, but there’s always a few.”

While Tom Watson, an American golf legend, expressed shame over the scenes, no formal apology has come from the US team or PGA of America.

Donald did commend Keegan Bradley and his team for showing respect despite the hostile environment.

Celebrations and Relief After “Most Stressful Day”

Europe led 11½–4½ entering the singles but were nearly overtaken by a resurgent American side. At one point, Donald feared the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history was on.

“At one point I thought we’d get to 20 points,” Donald said. “Then I thought we were going to lose. It was a weird, weird day.”

Once victory was secured, the team celebrated wildly, spraying champagne, swigging beers, and singing in a raucous joint interview.

Donald, who had remained teetotal in the build-up, finally joined in with a few celebratory drinks.

What’s Next?

  • Ryder Cup 2027: Scheduled for Adare Manor, Ireland from 17–19 September

  • Captaincy Decision: Donald says he will not rush, but a decision is expected in the coming months

  • Possible Successors: Rose, Molinaris, and other senior players will be under watch

The golfing world now waits to see whether Luke Donald will make history again by leading Europe in a record third straight Ryder Cup.
