Kevin Muscat Rangers Deal Collapses Amid Delay Concerns

Kevin Muscat Will Not Become Rangers Head Coach as Talks Break Down

Rangers’ efforts to appoint Kevin Muscat as their new head coach have ended in disappointment, with the deal collapsing due to timing concerns related to his current club commitments.

Muscat, currently managing Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, remains in contention for the league title. With the title race potentially stretching into late November or early December, a delayed start to his tenure at Ibrox proved unworkable for both sides.

Talks had reached an advanced stage, but the logistical challenges around Muscat’s availability forced Rangers to abandon the move.

Another Name Off the List: Gerrard & Rohl Also Declined

Muscat becomes the latest high-profile name to drop out of contention.

  • Steven Gerrard, the club’s former title-winning boss, declined a return to Glasgow

  • Danny Rohl, recently of Sheffield Wednesday, withdrew from consideration

Despite these setbacks, BBC Scotland reports that Rangers have spoken to several other candidates and remain confident of announcing an appointment within days.

Crisis at Ibrox: Poor Form & Managerial Turmoil

The search for a new head coach follows the sacking of Russell Martin, who was removed on 5 October after only 123 days in charge.

His tenure ended after:

  • Just 1 win from 8 league games

  • Failure to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage

Rangers currently sit 6th in the Scottish Premiership, enduring a winless run at home and struggling for consistency.

Steven Smith Holding the Reins (For Now)

Academy coach Steven Smith is currently overseeing first-team duties as interim head coach.

But performances under Smith have offered little optimism. On Saturday, Rangers had to come from behind to scrape a 2-2 draw at home to Dundee United, leaving them still without a league home win this season.

What’s Next for Rangers?

Rangers must now regroup quickly ahead of their Europa League clash against Brann on Thursday (17:45 BST). With the team in disarray and the managerial situation unresolved, pressure continues to mount on the board to find the right leader to steady the ship.
