Mural Defaced Before Emotional Anfield Return

A mural of Trent Alexander-Arnold, located near Anfield, was defaced just hours before the Real Madrid defender’s highly anticipated return to face former club Liverpool in the Champions League.

Originally unveiled in 2019 to celebrate Liverpool’s European triumph, the mural was again targeted with graffiti, including the word “Rat” and the phrase “adios el rata”, referencing the player’s controversial departure to Spain. White paint was also thrown at the image but was quickly removed.

Back at Anfield: A Tense Reunion Awaits

The 27-year-old right-back, a product of Liverpool’s academy, announced in May that he would leave the club at the end of his contract, sparking boos from sections of the fanbase. His transfer to Real Madrid was finalised in June, and fate has now brought him back to Anfield in the Champions League league phase.

“Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans,” Alexander-Arnold said in the pre-match press conference.

“I’ll always love the club… and be thankful for the opportunities and achievements — they’ll live with me forever.”
