Laporta Rules Out Messi Barcelona Return but Plans Tribute

Messi Return to Barcelona ‘Unrealistic’ Says Club President Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shut down speculation surrounding Lionel Messi’s return to the club, calling such a move “unrealistic.” However, Laporta confirmed plans to honor the Argentine legend with a tribute match once the renovated Nou Camp reopens.

The 37-year-old forward, who now plays for Inter Miami, made a surprise visit to Barcelona last week, fueling rumors of a potential comeback.

“For me to make speculation that is unrealistic, nor do I think is fair, I believe that is not appropriate,”

Laporta told Catalunya Radio.

Tribute Match in the Works

While a competitive return is off the table, Laporta emphasized his desire to celebrate Messi’s incredible legacy:

“It would be right that he has the best tribute in the world, and it would be wonderful to have it here, in front of 105,000 fans.”

Messi left Barça in 2021 after his contract could not be renewed due to severe financial constraints. He joined Paris Saint-Germain, before moving to MLS side Inter Miami in 2023. In October 2025, Messi signed a new contract until 2028 with the American club.

Messi’s Barcelona Legacy

Lionel Messi is widely regarded as the greatest player in Barcelona history. His record at the club includes:

  • 672 goals in 778 appearances – both club records

  • 10 La Liga titles

  • 4 UEFA Champions League trophies

  • 8 Ballon d’Or wins (most in football history)

  • Numerous assists, match-winning performances, and unforgettable moments

Despite leaving under difficult circumstances, Messi has expressed his desire to return in some form, saying he wants to come back “not just to say goodbye as a player.”

Nou Camp Renovation & Future Tribute

Barcelona’s iconic Camp Nou is currently undergoing major renovations and is expected to reopen with increased capacity and modernized facilities.

“When Camp Nou is ready, Messi deserves the greatest tribute football has ever seen,” Laporta added.

The idea is to bring Messi back in front of a full-capacity crowd of 105,000+, giving fans a final chance to thank him properly.
