Liverpool Fear Serious Injury for £125m Striker Isak After Spurs Win
Alexander Isak’s goal-scoring return for Liverpool ended in concern as the club fear the Swedish forward may have suffered a significant lower leg injury in their 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Isak came off the bench at Anfield and broke the deadlock with a clinical finish, only to be clattered by Micky van de Ven immediately after getting his shot away. He was unable to continue and limped off without attempting a return.
MRI Scan to Confirm Severity
The 26-year-old underwent MRI scans on Sunday, and Liverpool are awaiting results to determine the extent of the damage and recovery timeframe.
Head coach Arne Slot didn’t sound optimistic post-match:
“We’ll have to wait and see. But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn’t try to come back on the pitch, that’s usually not a good thing.”
Isak’s potential absence would be a huge blow to Liverpool, already missing Mohamed Salah (AFCON) and Cody Gakpo through injury.
Isak’s Struggles Since £125m Transfer
Signed from Newcastle for a record £125m on transfer deadline day, Isak has had a stop-start season:
-
Missed pre-season due to thigh injury and transfer limbo.
-
Has only scored 2 goals in 10 league appearances.
-
Has been limited to just 10 starts in all competitions.
He spent time training alone at Real Sociedad before arriving at Anfield and has looked short on match fitness.
Hugo Ekitike to Lead Liverpool’s Attack
With Salah away, Gakpo injured, and now Isak in doubt, summer signing Hugo Ekitike is expected to lead Liverpool’s front line.
-
The 23-year-old has 11 goals this season, including 5 in his last 3 league games.
-
Ekitike also scored against Tottenham, solidifying his role as Slot’s most in-form forward.
His recent form has been one of the few attacking positives for Liverpool amid the injury setbacks.
What’s Next for Liverpool?
Liverpool will be hoping for good news from Isak’s scan before Slot speaks at Tuesday’s press conference, where an official update is expected.
They continue their campaign without key players during a critical period, aiming to keep pace in the Premier League title race and progress in Europe.
