Mateta Tells Palace He Wants Out Amid Juve and Villa Interest

Jean-Philippe Mateta has told Crystal Palace he wants to leave the club, with interest from Premier League rivals and top European sides mounting.

The 28-year-old France international, who has 18 months left on his current contract, has no plans to sign an extension, and Crystal Palace are willing to listen to offers, according to manager Oliver Glasner.

Italian giants Juventus have already made an approach for Mateta this January, but have yet to meet Palace’s £40 million valuation. Meanwhile, Aston Villa are also monitoring the situation closely, having admired the striker for some time.

“There will be a price that Crystal Palace accept… If nobody pays that price, then he will stay,” said Glasner last week.

Frustration at Palace

Sources close to the player say Mateta is disappointed with the club’s broken promises — including the lack of a new contract, transfer ambition, and the overall direction of the project.

It’s a sentiment likely shared by fans, with Palace struggling both on and off the pitch. The club were shocked by non-league Macclesfield in the FA Cup, are winless in their last 10, and face a growing injury crisis.

Mateta, despite playing through a knee injury, has remained one of Palace’s few consistent performers. He scored in his last two matches for France, and with his Champions League and World Cup dreams alive, the striker is believed to be seeking a move to a club competing at the top level.

Selhurst Turmoil

Palace have already lost midfield star Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and club captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City in recent months. Glasner, who confirmed he will leave at the end of the season, recently criticized the board’s recruitment policy, stating the squad had been “abandoned.”

With Ismaila Sarr still on international duty, and Brennan Johnson the only major January signing so far, the club needs urgent reinforcements before the window closes on 2 February.
