Tottenham Crisis Deepens After Atletico Defeat
‘Wrong Person at Wrong Time’ – If Not Tudor, Who Can Save Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur face a growing crisis after a humiliating 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The result has intensified scrutiny on interim manager Igor Tudor, who has now overseen four consecutive defeats since replacing Thomas Frank in February.
With Spurs just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, the club’s immediate priority has shifted to survival.
A Season Spiralling Out of Control
Tottenham’s slump has been dramatic.
Only 10 months after winning the Europa League, the North London side now find themselves fighting to avoid their first relegation since 1977.
BBC commentator John Murray summed up the situation bluntly:
“In footballing terms, this is an absolute crisis that Tottenham are in.”
The team have nine league games remaining, including a difficult trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Questions Over Tudor’s Impact
Tudor was appointed partly because of his reputation for producing quick improvements at clubs.
At Juventus, he secured Champions League qualification with just one defeat in nine games during the closing stages of the 2024-25 season.
However, that impact has yet to appear at Spurs.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes the appointment may have been misguided.
“For Tottenham, it’s the wrong person at the wrong time.”
Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was even more critical.
“He’s a firefighter with a can of petrol… adding fuel to the fire.”
Confidence Crisis in the Squad
Tottenham players themselves have admitted the seriousness of the situation.
Midfielder Yves Bissouma described the club’s current predicament as “a big emergency.”
Former Spurs winger Chris Waddle believes the lack of confidence within the squad is a major issue.
“So many Spurs players hide because they’ve got no confidence.”
Potential Replacements for Tudor
If Tottenham decide to make another managerial change, their options appear limited.
Possible candidates include:
- Ryan Mason – former Spurs interim coach
- Tim Sherwood – has suggested a short-term return
- Mauricio Pochettino – currently managing the United States national team
- Roberto De Zerbi – recently left Marseille
- Edin Terzic – former Borussia Dortmund boss
- Marco Rose – ex RB Leipzig manager
Other potential long-term options such as Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva could become available in the summer.
Time Running Out for Spurs
Tottenham’s next few matches could define their season.
After the trip to Liverpool, they face a crucial clash against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest.
The club must also attempt a near-impossible comeback in the second leg against Atletico Madrid.
For now, Tudor remains in charge — but with results worsening and confidence collapsing, Tottenham’s leadership may soon face another difficult decision.
