Coventry Beat Wrexham to Boost Title Celebrations

Coventry City marked their Championship title success in style with a 3-1 victory over Wrexham at the Coventry Building Society Arena, dealing a major blow to the visitors’ play-off ambitions.

Fresh from sealing the league title earlier in the week, Frank Lampard’s side extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and moved to 92 points for the season with another impressive performance in front of jubilant home supporters.

Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring in the 19th minute, volleying home from close range after a dangerous delivery from Ephron Mason-Clark. It was the striker’s 13th league goal of the campaign and sparked celebrations around the stadium.

Wrexham responded quickly and were level just six minutes later. Issa Kabore delivered a cross into the area and Ollie Rathbone fired a powerful finish through the legs of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth to make it 1-1.

Phil Parkinson’s side pushed hard for a crucial result in their bid to secure a top-six finish. George Thomason struck the post before the break, while Sam Smith was denied by Rushworth in the second half after being sent through on goal.

Those missed opportunities proved costly as Coventry regained control in the closing stages. Victor Torp restored the hosts’ lead in the 80th minute with a superb free-kick from 20 yards after Dom Hyam fouled Mason-Clark on the edge of the area.

Deep into stoppage time, Mason-Clark capped a fine display by adding Coventry’s third goal to wrap up victory and send the home crowd into another celebration.

Despite the defeat, Wrexham remain sixth in the Championship standings, sitting above Hull City on goal difference and one point ahead of Derby County with one regular-season game remaining. Their promotion hopes are still alive, but pressure is mounting ahead of their final fixture against Middlesbrough.

Coventry, meanwhile, will close out their memorable campaign away at Watford before preparing for a long-awaited return to the Premier League next season.

After the match, Coventry manager Frank Lampard praised the connection between players and supporters.

“The celebrations at the end, lifting the cup, families on the pitch – that’s what football is all about.”

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson added:

“The lads acquitted themselves really well. Hopefully it won’t knock the boys, it shouldn’t do. We’ll be ready for next week.”

The result keeps Coventry’s momentum strong heading into the summer, while Wrexham now face one final push to keep their top-flight dream alive.
