Real Madrid Accuses La Liga Referees of Bias: “Manipulation Can No Longer Be Ignored”

Real Madrid has launched an unprecedented attack on La Liga referees, alleging bias and manipulation following their 1-0 defeat to Espanyol.

The club sent a formal letter of complaint to:
Spanish FA (RFEF)
Spain’s High Council for Sports

Real Madrid’s Allegations Against Referees

In their letter, Real Madrid claimed:
VAR and referees are “rigged” and “completely discredited.”
Decisions are manipulated against them, damaging the competition’s integrity.
The league’s officiating is “adulterating” results.

The controversy stems from a key decision in the Espanyol match:
Espanyol’s Carlos Romero—who scored the game’s only goal—was not sent off for an earlier challenge on Kylian Mbappe.

La Liga President Javier Tebas Responds

Speaking at a meeting with La Liga clubs—which Real Madrid did not attendTebas dismissed the club’s claims:

“Real Madrid wants to harm the competition, not just the refereeing group.”

“They have built a story of victimhood. The issue has been blown out of proportion, they have lost their head. Football doesn’t revolve around Real Madrid.”
