Ex-Wales and Liverpool defender Joey Jones dies aged 70

Former Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham defender Joey Jones has died at the age of 70.

The iconic left-back, who earned 72 international caps, played a pivotal role for club and country during a distinguished career spanning over two decades.

Jones famously became the first Welshman to lift the European Cup, as part of Liverpool’s triumphant side that beat Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome in 1977. The memorable victory inspired fans to create a 24ft banner proclaiming:

“Joey ate the frogs legs, made the Swiss roll, now he’s munching Gladbach.”

During his glittering three-year spell at Liverpool, Jones won:

First Division title

Two European Cups

UEFA Cup

European Super Cup

Career highlights

  • Jones had three spells with Wrexham, winning the Welsh Cup during his first stint and later becoming their record signing in 1978.

  • He helped Chelsea secure the Second Division title in 1983-84.

  • Jones also played for Huddersfield Town before retiring in 1992 at age 37.

Tributes pour in

Wrexham said they were “devastated” by Jones’ death and announced plans to honor him with a statue outside the Stok Cae Ras’ Kop Stand.

His former Wales, Wrexham, and Chelsea team-mate Mickey Thomas wrote on X:

“This morning I lost my best friend and soulmate, Sir Joey. Our memories will never fade. Today my heart is broken.”

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge added:

“What a lovely man and an inspirational full-back who gave his heart and soul in a red shirt and for all the clubs he played for. I’m a lucky man to have met him many times.”

Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney said:

“Everyone in Welsh football was sorry to hear of the passing of Joey Jones – Wrexham and Cymru legend. Loved by many. Cwsg mewn hedd (rest in peace) Joey.”
