Swiatek Dominates Arango to Launch US Open 2025 Campaign
World number two Iga Swiatek began her bid for a second US Open crown in commanding fashion, dispatching Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 23-year-old Pole, who recently clinched her maiden Wimbledon title and lifted the Cincinnati Open trophy, looked sharp and focused as she cruised through her opening match at Flushing Meadows. Swiatek struck 26 winners, won 76% of points on her serve, and didn’t face a single break point.
“It felt great – first matches are not easy to get used to the rhythm and it was a solid match,” said Swiatek.
“I am happy that I wasn’t trying to overpower and I was solid.”
Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, wasted little time asserting dominance. She broke Arango’s serve in the fourth and sixth games of the first set, then stormed ahead early in the second with another immediate break.
Arango, ranked 84th in the world, couldn’t find answers to Swiatek’s precision and power. The match wrapped up swiftly, showcasing the kind of ruthless efficiency that made Swiatek a title favorite once again in New York.
Next up for the Polish star is a second-round encounter with Dutch player Suzan Lamens, currently ranked world number 66.
Swiatek Shines in Mixed Doubles Too
Swiatek also made waves in the newly revamped mixed doubles event, partnering with Norway’s Casper Ruud. The duo reached the final but fell short to defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Still, her performance across both formats suggests she is in peak condition for another deep Grand Slam run.
Mixed Fortunes for American Players
Eighth seed Amanda Anisimova enjoyed a smooth start, defeating Australia’s Kim Birrell 6-3, 6-2. Despite a shaky first set filled with 17 unforced errors, Anisimova found her rhythm and closed the match by winning the last five games. She will face Australian teenager Maya Joint in round two.
“I was nervous but I was just trying to have a little fun out there. I’m happy to be back,” Anisimova said, reflecting on her return after a heavy Wimbledon final loss to Swiatek.
However, there was disappointment for fellow American Danielle Collins, who crashed out early for the second straight year. The 2019 Australian Open semi-finalist managed just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Romania’s Jacqueline Cristian. Collins appeared hindered by a lingering back injury throughout the match.
With early signs pointing to Swiatek’s relentless form, the US Open 2025 promises more drama as the world’s best battle for the final Grand Slam title of the season.
