Alcaraz Battles Past Struff to Reach Wimbledon Fourth Round
Alcaraz Overcomes Struff to Stay on Course for Wimbledon Hat-Trick
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz kept his Wimbledon title defence alive with a hard-fought 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Jan-Lennard Struff to reach the fourth round at the All England Club.
The Spanish world number two will now face 14th seed Andrey Rublev for a place in the quarter-finals.
“That Was Stressful” – Alcaraz Reflects on Tough Win
Alcaraz, 22, breezed through the opening set on Centre Court, dropping just one game in under 30 minutes. However, Struff, ranked 125 in the world, roared back in the second set, using his big serve and net play to level the match.
Alcaraz regained control in the third set as Struff’s serve wavered, and a crucial backhand volley at the net late in the fourth helped the Spaniard secure the decisive break.
🗨️ “I knew it was going to be difficult. He has big serves and approaches the net a lot. I’m proud to get the win in four sets. It was stressful, and I was suffering in every set,” Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz is chasing a third straight Wimbledon crown and extended his unbeaten run to 21 matches.
Rublev Awaits in Next Round
Russia’s Andrey Rublev booked his place in the last 16 with a commanding 7-5 6-2 6-3 win over Adrian Mannarino. Rublev and Alcaraz have met five times, with Alcaraz leading the head-to-head 4-1.
Taylor Fritz Survives Another Wimbledon Epic
Elsewhere, American Taylor Fritz won another long battle, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1.
All three of Fritz’s matches so far have lasted over three hours. He now meets Australia’s Jordan Thompson, who beat Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3.
South American Clash Ends Fonseca’s Dream Run
Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca exited the tournament after a four-set defeat to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry.
Jarry, whose grandfather Jaime Fillol reached Wimbledon’s fourth round in 1974, said: “I came here as a kid with him, and I’ve loved this tournament ever since. Every match I win here makes me stay a couple more days, and that makes me very happy.”
Jarry faces Britain’s Cameron Norrie next.
