Amorim drops Højlund as United launch new era vs Arsenal

Højlund Omitted as Amorim Backs New-Look United Attack

Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund has been left out of the squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford, with head coach Ruben Amorim signalling a new era in attack.

Sesko Arrival Shifts the Striker Hierarchy

The £72m Dane has been a key figure since joining from Atalanta two years ago, but the £73.7m summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko has reduced his chances of regular minutes.

Despite recovering from injury, Andre Onana was also omitted, with Amorim explaining:

“He recovered but the other guys did so well in pre-season, so I have to balance that.”

Højlund was already benched for United’s final pre-season game against Fiorentina, while Sesko was unveiled to fans before kick-off.

Mount Leads the Line Again

With Højlund left out, Mason Mount starts once again as a false nine, supported by new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in Amorim’s dual number 10 system.

Joshua Zirkzee and Sesko are among the substitutes, while youngster Chido Obi is expected to be eased in as a late-game option.

Transfer Speculation Intensifies

AC Milan remain interested in signing Højlund, though no agreement has been reached. The 22-year-old previously expressed his desire to stay at United, but Amorim’s £200m summer rebuild has cast doubt over his future.

Højlund managed 16 goals in his debut season before hitting 10 last term, but Amorim has shown little hesitation in reshaping United’s attack, even backing Bruno Fernandes or Kobbie Mainoo to play false nine roles if required.

United Leadership Back Amorim’s Call

The decision to exclude Højlund has been supported internally, with club chiefs determined to give Amorim freedom as he implements his vision.

United begin the season with optimism after an expensive rebuild – but the omission of last season’s main striker marks a significant turning point.
