Anthony Joshua Breaks Silence After Fatal Nigeria Car Crash

Anthony Joshua has shared his first message since the tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

The 36-year-old British boxing star posted a solemn update on Instagram on Sunday morning, just hours after returning to the UK. The post includes a powerful image of Joshua sitting with his mother and the mothers of the two deceased friends, one of whom holds a framed photo of Ghami.

The caption reads simply:

“My Brothers Keeper.”

Tragedy in Nigeria: What Happened?

Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos earlier this week. The vehicle crash led to the deaths of Ghami and Ayodele, long-time members of Joshua’s inner circle.

Joshua was hospitalized briefly and discharged on Wednesday. He returned to the UK over the weekend to attend the funerals, held at a mosque in London on Sunday.

A police investigation in Nigeria has resulted in driver Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, being charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He was granted bail of 5 million naira (£2,578), with the next court date scheduled for 20 January.

Emotional Homecoming to Sagamu

Joshua was born in Watford, UK, but has deep family ties to Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. A family member confirmed to the BBC that Joshua was on his way to visit relatives for New Year celebrations when the tragic crash occurred.

The visit came just days after Joshua’s latest victory—a high-profile win over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on 19 December.

Social Media Reaction

The image posted by Joshua quickly went viral, with an outpouring of support from fellow athletes, fans, and public figures. The caption, “My Brothers Keeper,” has been widely interpreted as a message of loyalty and grief, paying tribute to Ghami and Ayodele’s memory.

What’s Next for Joshua?

While no official statement has been made about Joshua’s boxing future following the tragedy, speculation continues around a potential 2026 showdown with Tyson Fury, who recently announced his own return to boxing. Those plans now hang in the balance amid Joshua’s recovery from both emotional trauma and minor injuries sustained in the crash.
