Arsenal Beat 10-Man Chelsea to Go Five Points Clear
Arsenal Beat Chelsea to Restore Five-Point Lead at the Top
Arsenal reclaimed control of the Premier League title race with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea at Emirates Stadium, restoring their five-point lead at the summit.
After Manchester City had cut the gap to two points with victory at Leeds on Saturday, the pressure was firmly on Mikel Arteta’s side. Arsenal responded in trademark fashion — from set-pieces.
Corners Prove Decisive Again
Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 21st minute following a well-worked corner routine.
Gabriel Magalhaes headed Bukayo Saka’s delivery back across goal for William Saliba, whose header struck Mamadou Sarr on the arm before crossing the line.
Chelsea fought back before the break. Reece James’s corner caused chaos and resulted in an own goal from Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie.
But Arsenal’s set-piece dominance resurfaced in the second half. Declan Rice delivered another pinpoint corner, and Jurrien Timber rose highest to head home the winner — Arsenal’s 16th goal from a corner this season.
That equals the Premier League single-season record.
Neto Sees Red as Chelsea Collapse
Chelsea were growing into the contest before self-discipline cost them once again.
Pedro Neto, already on a yellow card, brought down Gabriel Martinelli during a counter-attack and was shown a second yellow with 20 minutes remaining.
It was Chelsea’s seventh Premier League red card of the campaign — a recurring theme undermining their season.
Liam Delap thought he had snatched a late equaliser, but the goal was ruled out after Joao Pedro was clearly offside in the build-up.
Arsenal’s Title Credentials Strengthen
Arsenal move to 64 points, five clear of Manchester City, albeit having played a game more.
This was not a vintage performance, but it was another example of a team capable of grinding out results when required.
Their set-piece efficiency continues to define their campaign:
-
16 Premier League goals from corners
-
Nine matches opened by a corner goal
-
League-best dead-ball conversion rate
Arteta’s side have now demonstrated resilience, tactical clarity and composure under pressure — hallmarks of genuine title contenders.
Chelsea’s Recurring Issues
For Chelsea, the defeat highlighted two persistent problems:
-
Defensive vulnerability from set-pieces
-
Discipline issues in key moments
With injuries mounting and suspensions piling up, the Blues’ push for Champions League qualification is under growing strain.
What’s Next?
-
Arsenal travel to Brighton on Wednesday
-
Chelsea visit Aston Villa (19:30 GMT)
The title race remains alive — and Arsenal have just delivered another statement.
