Wieffer Double Fires Brighton Past Burnley
Brighton & Hove Albion kept their European ambitions alive with a 2-0 victory over Burnley, thanks to a decisive brace from Mats Wieffer at Turf Moor.
The result moved Brighton to within two points of sixth place in the Premier League, while Burnley’s struggles deepened as they edged closer to relegation with just six matches remaining.
Burnley thought they had made a perfect start when Jaidon Anthony found the net early on, but the goal was ruled out for offside. That moment summed up a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who have managed just one league win since October.
Brighton gradually took control of the game and created several opportunities before breaking the deadlock just before half-time. Wieffer made a well-timed run into the box to convert a low cross from Pascal Gross, giving the visitors a deserved lead.
The Seagulls continued to dominate after the break, with Burnley seeing another effort disallowed for offside. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen also played a key role, producing a crucial save to deny Zian Flemming and keep Brighton’s advantage intact.
Brighton had chances to extend their lead earlier but finally secured the win in the closing stages when Wieffer struck again from the edge of the box, ending a 16-month goal drought in style.
The victory marked Brighton’s third consecutive league win and their fifth in the last six matches, highlighting a strong late-season resurgence under manager Fabian Hurzeler. Despite serving a touchline ban, Hurzeler’s influence was evident as his side displayed discipline, intensity and effective pressing.
For Burnley, the defeat leaves them second from bottom, 12 points adrift of safety. Manager Scott Parker faces a daunting task to keep his side in the top flight, with time rapidly running out.
With momentum firmly on their side, Brighton remain serious contenders for a European place, while Burnley’s survival hopes continue to fade.
