De Zerbi Responds to Greenwood Backlash at Spurs
Roberto De Zerbi says he was “not surprised” by the backlash from supporters following his previous comments about Mason Greenwood, as he prepares for his first match in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
The Italian, who was appointed Spurs head coach on 31 March, faced criticism from sections of the fanbase over remarks he made while managing Marseille, where he worked with Greenwood. His comments were seen by some as downplaying the seriousness of the allegations previously made against the player.
Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League clash with Sunderland, De Zerbi acknowledged the reaction but insisted he remained consistent in his stance.
“I wasn’t surprised,” De Zerbi said. “I was a bit sad because I’m sorry if someone took offence. I have always been against any kind of violence, especially against women.”
The former Brighton & Hove Albion manager emphasised his personal values, referencing his family and reiterating his opposition to all forms of abuse and discrimination.
Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, faced charges including attempted rape and assault in 2022, which were later dropped in February 2023. De Zerbi’s earlier comments describing the player as a “good lad” who had “paid strongly” for what happened drew criticism from supporter groups.
Several Tottenham fan organisations publicly opposed De Zerbi’s appointment, expressing concern over his remarks. The manager later issued an apology following his arrival in north London.
On the pitch, De Zerbi faces an immediate challenge, with Tottenham currently in the relegation zone and without a league win in 2026. The club has already changed managers twice this season, following spells under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.
Despite the difficult situation, De Zerbi expressed confidence in the squad and his ability to stabilise the team.
“I am proud to be here. Tottenham is a big club in the best league in the world,” he said. “We have to deserve the support of the fans and show the right spirit on the pitch.”
Injury concerns continue to affect Spurs, with key players including Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison sidelined, while Mohammed Kudus could miss the remainder of the season.
De Zerbi confirmed he hopes to remain at the club long-term but stressed the immediate priority is securing Premier League survival.
