Arsenal in Advanced Talks to Sign Sporting Star Viktor Gyokeres for £70m

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Sporting Lisbon’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres for £70m as they intensify their efforts to secure a new forward ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

As first reported by BBC Sport, the Gunners have made significant progress in their pursuit of the 27-year-old Sweden international. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is leading the negotiations, which have accelerated in recent days.

While personal terms and a final agreement with Sporting are still to be completed, sources indicate the deal is moving towards completion.

Gyokeres has enjoyed a sensational spell in Portugal, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances and leading Sporting to consecutive Primeira Liga titles and the 2024-25 Portuguese Cup.

“If Gyokeres arrives, he could be the striker to finally push Arsenal over the line in the title race,” said senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel.

Arsenal’s Striker Solution?

The Gunners’ need for a top-class centre-forward has been well documented after falling short in the Premier League last season. Mikel Arteta is hoping Gyokeres’ explosive form in Portugal can translate into goals in England as Arsenal aim to end their title drought.

Earlier this week, Arsenal confirmed the £60m signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The potential arrival of Gyokeres would represent another marquee addition as the club looks to overhaul its squad for a serious title charge.

Gyokeres’ Career So Far

  • Debut: IF Brommapojkarna (2015, Sweden)

  • Brighton & Hove Albion (2018-21): Limited opportunities in Premier League

  • Breakthrough: Coventry City (2021-23) – 43 goals in 116 games

  • Sporting Lisbon (2023-25): 97 goals in 102 games, 2x Primeira Liga titles

Gyokeres also has international pedigree, with 15 goals in 35 appearances for Sweden.

What’s Next?

A deal is not yet finalized, and Arsenal remain cautious until all agreements are signed. However, if completed, this transfer would address one of the Gunners’ key priorities this summer.

Arsenal are tired of finishing second. Gyokeres’ task is clear: fire the Gunners to the Premier League title,” Mokbel added.
