Clara Tauson Beats Keys to Reach Canadian Open Semi-Finals
Tauson Defeats Keys for Second Consecutive Top-10 Victory
Clara Tauson reached her second career WTA 1000 semi-final after a dominant 6-1 6-4 win over Grand Slam champion Madison Keys at the Canadian Open in Montreal.
The 16th seed from Denmark backed up her victory over world number two Iga Swiatek in the previous round with another top-10 scalp.
Victory Dedicated to Her Late Grandfather
After the match, the 22-year-old revealed she had been playing through personal tragedy:
“Two days ago, my grandfather unfortunately passed away – so I really wanted to win for him today,” Tauson said. “Hopefully he’s watching.”
She explained she learned the news the day after beating Swiatek and was determined to produce her best tennis in his honour.
Clinical Performance Against Keys
Tauson, ranked 19th in the world, converted both break point chances in the opening set and wrapped it up in just over 30 minutes.
Keys, the Australian Open champion, dropped serve early in the second set, and Tauson held her nerve to secure the win and book her place in the last four.
Osaka Awaits in the Semi-Finals
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka reached the Canadian Open semi-finals for the first time after a 6-2 6-2 win over Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina later revealed she had received “shameful” abuse from online bettors after the match, sharing screenshots on Instagram:
“I’m a mom before I’m an athlete… If your moms saw your messages, they’d be disgusted.”
Osaka, a former world number one, capitalised on Svitolina’s unforced errors, breaking twice in each set to seal victory in just over an hour.
Looking ahead to her clash with Tauson, Osaka said:
“She’s really tough. I played her in Auckland this year and had to stop halfway due to injury. I’m excited to be healthy and hope it’s a great match.”
Men’s Tournament – Toronto Semi-Finals Set
In the men’s event in Toronto, Taylor Fritz beat Andrey Rublev 6-3 7-6(4) to reach the semi-finals, where he will face fellow American Ben Shelton.
Shelton overcame Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 to book his first career Masters 1000 semi-final.
