De Bruyne Scores on Napoli Debut as Champions Beat Sassuolo 2-0

Kevin de Bruyne made an immediate impact for Napoli as the Serie A champions began their title defence with a 2-0 victory over Sassuolo on the opening weekend.

The Belgian midfielder, who joined on a free transfer after a decade with Manchester City, curled in a trademark free-kick to seal the win shortly before the hour mark.

McTominay Sets Napoli on Their Way

Napoli took the lead in the 17th minute through Scott McTominay, who powered home a header from a cross by Italy international Matteo Politano.

The 28-year-old Scot has become a fan favourite in Naples since his move from Manchester United in 2024. His 12 league goals last season earned him the Serie A MVP award as Antonio Conte’s side clinched the title. McTominay’s consistent form has now seen him nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

De Bruyne Delivers on Debut

At 34, de Bruyne showcased his trademark precision, whipping a free-kick into the far corner to double Napoli’s advantage. The strike marked a dream start to his Serie A career and underlined the champions’ strength in depth.

Sassuolo Frustrated

The hosts’ hopes of a late comeback were dashed when Ismael Kone, on loan from Marseille, was sent off for a second bookable offence with 11 minutes remaining.

Despite some pressure, Sassuolo struggled to test Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret as Conte’s side comfortably saw out the match.

Elsewhere in Serie A

Genoa and Lecce played out a cagey 0-0 draw in one of the day’s other fixtures, producing few clear chances.
