Depay Breaks Dutch Goal Record in Win Over Lithuania

Memphis Depay Becomes Netherlands’ All-Time Leading Scorer

Memphis Depay etched his name into football history by becoming the Netherlands’ all-time leading goal scorer, netting twice in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Lithuania in the 2025 World Cup qualifiers.

The 31-year-old striker, who now plays for Corinthians in Brazil, scored his 51st and 52nd international goals, overtaking Robin van Persie’s long-standing record of 50 goals for the Dutch national team.

Depay’s Historic Goals

Depay’s first goal arrived early in the game, as he neatly tapped in a Cody Gakpo cross to surpass Van Persie’s tally and claim the outright record.

But the momentous night didn’t stop there.

After Lithuania fought back to level the score at 2-2 by halftime, it was Depay who struck again in the second half. He powered in a header from Denzel Dumfries’ cross to seal the 3-2 win — and write another line into Dutch football history.

Career Milestones

  • 52 goals in 104 caps

  • Debuted in 2013 vs Turkey

  • First goal: vs Australia, 2014 World Cup

  • Surpasses Van Persie’s 50 goals in 102 caps

  • Played for PSV, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid

  • Currently with Corinthians (Brazil)

Group G Standings Update

The Netherlands now top Group G with 10 points from four matches. The match took place in Kaunas, and despite facing FIFA’s 143rd-ranked side, the Dutch were briefly rattled when Lithuania clawed back a 2-0 deficit.

Notably, Lithuania became the lowest-ranked team ever to score twice against the Netherlands, but Depay ensured his team did not drop points.

Reactions & Legacy

Depay, often a divisive figure during his club career, has firmly cemented his legacy with the national team. Known for his flair and charisma, the forward has evolved into a consistent scorer at the international level.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about since my debut,” Depay said post-match. “To do it in a tough game like this, and help us win — it means everything.”

Robin van Persie, the man whose record Depay broke, also offered praise on social media:

“Records are made to be broken. Congrats Memphis — you deserve it.”

What’s Next?

The Netherlands continue their qualifying campaign next month, where they’ll aim to solidify their lead in Group G and take another step toward World Cup 2026 qualification.
