The family of Ricky Hatton say the former world boxing champion was “in a good place” and “excited for the future” before he was found dead at his home in Manchester on Sunday, aged 46.

Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and the British boxing community remains in mourning for the beloved ‘Hitman’, whose thrilling career captivated fans across the UK and beyond.

“Richard Was Not Alone in Life”

In a heartfelt statement posted to Hatton’s official Instagram account, his family said:

“To all our knowledge, despite his well-documented struggles, Richard was in a good place. We are all in shock at the events that unfolded over the weekend.”

“Richard was not alone in life or in the days before the weekend.”

Hatton, known for his courage in the ring and vulnerability outside it, had been open about his battles with depression, even starring in a 2023 documentary that explored his personal life and mental health journey.

Hatton was discovered by his close friend and long-time manager Paul Speak, the family confirmed.

His sudden death comes despite numerous signs of optimism, with the statement noting:

“His bag was packed ready to go to Dubai to promote a comeback fight.”

Hatton had been scheduled to face Eisa Al Dah on 2 December in Dubai. Though the bout’s official sanctioning was unclear, it was being billed as a professional fight—and Hatton was planning to make it a family celebration.

“He was excited that [his daughters] Millie and Fearne would see him fight for the first time in person,” the family said.

“He was a doting grandfather and loved spending time with Campbell and Lydia.”
