Juventus Beat Benfica to Reach Champions League Playoffs

Juventus sealed their place in the Champions League play-offs with a composed 2-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, thanks to second-half goals from Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes in Turin, it was Thuram — son of World Cup winner Lilian — who broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner after clever play by Jonathan David.

Just nine minutes later, David was again the provider, playing a precise through ball for McKennie, who coolly slotted home Juventus’ second and final goal of the night.

Benfica Fail to Capitalize

Benfica, needing points to stay in play-off contention, had several opportunities to respond. Fredrik Aursnes saw his header crash off the post, and their best chance came from the penalty spot after Gleison Bremer brought down Leandro Barreiro.

But Vangelis Pavlidis slipped during the penalty, sending the ball wide and effectively ending Benfica’s hopes of a comeback.

What It Means

With one matchday remaining, Juventus sit 15th, securing at least a play-off spot. They could still clinch a top-eight finish and automatic Round of 16 qualification, but would need a convincing win against Monaco next week and favorable results elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s Benfica are 29th, needing a miracle to stay alive. They must beat Real Madrid, one of Mourinho’s former clubs, and hope other results go their way.

Mourinho — who has lifted the Champions League trophy with both Porto and Inter — now faces the prospect of a group-stage exit.
