Sacking Postecoglou Was Emotionally Difficult – Spurs Chairman Levy

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy says sacking manager Ange Postecoglou, just 16 days after leading the club to Europa League glory, was an emotionally difficult but necessary decision.

Postecoglou guided Spurs to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy. However, a disappointing domestic campaign that saw the team finish 17th in the Premier League ultimately cost him his job.

“Grateful to Ange, But We Need to Compete”

“I don’t regret appointing Ange, I’m very grateful to him,” said Levy in an interview with Spurs’ in-house media team.

“In his first season we finished fifth, and in his second we were over the moon to win a trophy. But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. Emotionally it was difficult, but we feel we’ve made the right decision for the club.”

Thomas Frank: The No.1 Candidate

Postecoglou’s successor is Thomas Frank, the former Brentford manager, who signed a contract to stay at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2028.

Newly appointed chief executive Vinai Venkatesham detailed the hiring process:

“We defined 10 characteristics needed to succeed at Spurs, assessed more than 30 candidates, and Thomas was clearly our number one choice,” said Venkatesham.

“He’s also an outstanding developer of young talent, which aligns perfectly with our current squad.”

Levy added:

“He is clearly highly intelligent, a great communicator, a super human being — plus all the technical aspects which are obviously important.”

Tottenham’s Coaching Carousel

Frank becomes Tottenham’s 13th permanent manager under Levy’s 25-year tenure. Despite mounting pressure, Levy remains committed:

“Failure is not an option,” he stated. “And because it’s so difficult, I want to succeed even more.”

With Spurs aiming to build on their Europa League success, Levy believes a “fresh start” under Frank is the best path forward.
