Lottie Woad Makes History with Dominant Women’s Irish Open Victory
Lottie Woad etched her name in the history books on Sunday by winning the Women’s Irish Open in commanding style, becoming the first amateur to secure a Ladies European Tour (LET) title since 2022.
The 21-year-old English star produced a composed four-under-par final round of 69 at Carton House to finish at 21-under overall, six shots ahead of Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom. Woad’s flawless performance across all four rounds saw her break 70 each day, a testament to her growing reputation as one of golf’s brightest young talents.
As Woad retains her amateur status, she will not receive the €67,500 (£58,000) winner’s cheque, which instead goes to Sagstrom.
“It felt pretty comfortable overall,” Woad said after her victory. “There were a few moments at the start of the back nine that could’ve gone wrong, but I hung in there and finished with some nice birdies.”
Woad, who won the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur in April, picked up two birdies in her first four holes before dropping a shot at the par-four fifth. She quickly regained her momentum with further birdies on the eighth, 13th, and a superb closing stretch that included back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.
England’s Charley Hull finished fourth at 12-under after a final round 69, while compatriot Hannah Screen shared fifth at 10-under following a closing 67. Ireland’s Anna Foster was the leading home player, tying for 12th at eight-under.
This triumph marks Woad’s first LET victory and cements her status as the world’s top-ranked amateur golfer heading into next week’s Evian Championship in France.
“Obviously I had a big lead coming into today, but I was being chased by some really good players. I’m proud I was able to focus and get it done,” Woad added.
