Mourinho Falls to Chelsea as Benfica Lose 1-0 at Stamford Bridge
Mourinho Defeated on Chelsea Return as Blues Edge Benfica 1-0
Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge ended in disappointment as Chelsea secured a narrow 1-0 win over Benfica in a tense Champions League group stage clash.
Mourinho, appointed just 12 days ago by Benfica, was warmly welcomed by the Chelsea faithful who serenaded their most decorated former manager throughout the evening. But a first-half own goal by Richard Rios proved decisive on a frustrating night for the Portuguese giants.
Rios Own Goal the Decider
The game’s only goal came in the 18th minute when Pedro Neto’s cross was fizzed back across goal by Alejandro Garnacho, ricocheting off Colombian midfielder Richard Rios and past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
While Garnacho had a lively first half, his finishing let him down, and Chelsea rarely threatened to extend their lead. Benfica had their moments but lacked sharpness in the final third.
Joao Pedro Red Card Caps Fiery Night
The final whistle did not come without controversy as Joao Pedro received a second yellow card in the sixth minute of stoppage time, becoming Chelsea’s third red card in four games.
It came too late to alter the outcome but will add to growing concerns for manager Enzo Maresca, whose side has often struggled with discipline in recent weeks.
Fernandez Shines Against Former Club
Enzo Fernandez, who captained Chelsea and played against his former club, delivered a commanding performance and was involved in the build-up to the only goal. His late runs and tireless midfield presence were key in Chelsea’s control of the game.
-
7 goals and 9 assists in his last 27 appearances.
-
Involved in more duels and fouled more than any other player on the night.
-
Continues to fill the attacking gap left by Cole Palmer, who remains sidelined with a groin injury.
Despite being targeted by away fans—who threw objects at him while taking a corner—Fernandez remained composed, later receiving praise from Mourinho himself, who tried to calm the Benfica crowd.
Mourinho’s Stamford Bridge Struggles Continue
Mourinho has now failed to win in his last seven away visits to Chelsea since his 2010 Champions League success with Inter Milan.
Benfica’s best chance came via Fredrik Aursnes early in the second half, but the Norwegian was narrowly flagged offside after Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez was beaten.
“It was a moment that could’ve changed the match,” Mourinho noted post-game, “but we gave them the goal and created too little.”
Benfica Stumble, Chelsea Revive Form
-
This marked Chelsea’s first Champions League win since March 2023.
-
The victory provides some breathing space for Maresca, ending a rough month that included a poor run in the Premier League.
-
For Benfica and Mourinho, the match served as a reality check, as they now face an uphill battle in Group F.
