Newcastle Target Yoane Wissa Returns to Brentford Training
Brentford striker Yoane Wissa has returned to full training with the squad despite uncertainty over his future, head coach Keith Andrews confirmed.
The 28-year-old forward missed Brentford’s opening-day defeat at Nottingham Forest after asking to leave the club. Newcastle United have made two failed bids for the DR Congo international, the latest worth £35m plus £5m in add-ons, but Brentford are holding firm with their valuation.
Brentford Coach: “Decision to Make” on Aston Villa Clash
Speaking ahead of the Bees’ clash with Aston Villa, Andrews revealed Wissa could still feature:
“He’s been training with the team. I’ll make a decision on Saturday regarding the squad. My stance has not changed – I don’t want to lose a player of that quality.”
Wissa removed Brentford references from his Instagram account earlier this week, intensifying speculation about a move. Despite this, Andrews insists he hopes the striker remains at the club for at least the next 10-12 days until the transfer window closes.
Newcastle’s Pursuit and Brentford’s Position
Newcastle are eager to bolster their attack ahead of their return to the Champions League and see Wissa as a key target after his prolific 2023-24 season, where he netted 19 Premier League goals.
Brentford, however, have already lost forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and are reluctant to sanction another high-profile departure, particularly after signing Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth in a club-record £42.5m deal.
Wissa’s camp expected a move this week following Ouattara’s arrival, but Brentford have so far resisted Newcastle’s advances.
What Next for Wissa?
With the season underway and speculation growing, Wissa’s future remains unresolved. If no agreement is reached, Andrews may be forced to reintegrate the striker into the squad to maintain Brentford’s attacking strength.
