Steven Gerrard Poised to Hold Talks Over Rangers Return

Steven Gerrard is set to enter discussions with Rangers FC over a possible return to Ibrox as head coach, BBC Sport reports.

The Scottish Premiership giants are seeking a replacement for Russell Martin, who was dismissed on Sunday after a disappointing start to the season.

While Rangers are expected to conduct a full recruitment process, Gerrard has emerged as a leading candidate, with significant backing from the club’s supporters and the board’s renewed interest in his leadership credentials.

Rangers Open Door for Fan-Favourite Return

Rangers officials are awaiting confirmation that Gerrard is open to returning before progressing formal talks. Initial contact has been made, and negotiations are expected to develop in the coming days.

Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, guiding the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade by going unbeaten in the 2020–21 league campaign.

However, his departure to Aston Villa in November 2021 ended that chapter. Villa finished 14th under his leadership in his first full season, and he was sacked 12 matches into his second following poor results.

Recent Managerial Timeline

After leaving Villa, Gerrard took charge of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 but left the post by mutual consent in January 2025. At the time, he was again linked with a potential Rangers return, although the club ultimately appointed Russell Martin in June.

Martin struggled to assert control, winning just 5 of his 17 matches in charge. Rangers are currently eighth in the table, 11 points behind leaders Hearts.

Gerrard: “I Want to Compete to Win”

In a recent interview with Rio Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast, Gerrard expressed his eagerness to return to the touchline.

“I want to be at a team that’s going to compete to win, because I think that suits me better,” Gerrard said.

He added that there have been “five or six really interesting phone calls” since his Saudi exit, but timing had not yet aligned — until possibly now.

What’s Next?

While no official offer has been made, Rangers are eager to hold talks with Gerrard soon. Though multiple candidates are expected to be interviewed, sources close to the club suggest Gerrard is a top contender for the vacancy.

Should the talks progress smoothly, a sensational return to Ibrox could be on the cards, rekindling a successful chapter in the club’s recent history.
