Vondrousova and Bublik Win Berlin and Halle Titles in Perfect Wimbledon Preparation
Wimbledon Champion Returns to Form
Marketa Vondrousova secured her first title since winning Wimbledon in 2023, lifting the Berlin Open trophy after a hard-fought 7-6 (12-10), 4-6, 6-2 win over Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu.
The 25-year-old Czech had endured a difficult year with injuries but showed her class by saving six set points in a dramatic first-set tie-break. Despite dropping the second set, Vondrousova controlled the decider to claim her third career title.
“It was nice to see a full crowd. I really enjoyed the tennis this week and the support,” Vondrousova said after the win.
Wang, 23, had a breakthrough tournament, defeating four top-20 players en route to her first-ever WTA final, and will now be a player to watch during the grass-court swing.
British Success in Berlin Doubles
In the doubles final, British No.1 Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova overcame top seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 to lift the Berlin Open doubles crown, marking a significant boost for British hopes ahead of Wimbledon.
Bublik Shocks Medvedev in Halle
At the Halle Open, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik delivered one of the best weeks of his career, beating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the final.
The world number 30, who had previously lost all six of his matches against Medvedev, produced confident serving and aggressive baseline play to win in just 82 minutes.
It’s Bublik’s fifth ATP title, his second Halle title, and comes just weeks after reaching the French Open quarter-finals.
“I was close to calling it quits after Wimbledon last year. Now this is happening. I have no words,” said an emotional Bublik.
