England squad rallies behind Ben White

Jordan Henderson has publicly backed Ben White after the defender was booed by sections of England fans during his international return at Wembley.

White, 28, made his first appearance since leaving the squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and experienced a mixed night in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay national football team.

Mixed night: boos, then a goal

  • Substituted on in the 69th minute → booed by fans
  • Scored his first England goal → cheers followed
  • Later conceded a penalty → Uruguay equalised

Despite the rollercoaster moment, Henderson made it clear the squad stands firmly behind him.

Henderson: “We will always support him”

Henderson, who has faced similar criticism in the past after his move to Al-Ettifaq, said:

“As team-mates we are always there to support… that is part and parcel of being an England player.”

He also suggested fan reactions are often influenced by incomplete narratives:

“A lot of the time what the media says isn’t true… not many people know what happened in Qatar.”

Why was White booed?

White’s absence from the national team dates back to 2022:

  • Left England’s World Cup camp early for personal reasons
  • Declined selection during Gareth Southgate’s tenure
  • Details of the situation were never fully clarified

That lack of clarity appears to have contributed to fan frustration.

Tuchel’s stance: “Clear the air”

England boss Thomas Tuchel believes communication is key:

  • Called White back into the squad recently
  • Encouraged him to explain the situation internally
  • Described it as “necessary” for team harmony

So far, White has not publicly addressed the issue.

A rare Wembley moment

It was an unusual and striking scene:

A player scoring his first England goal at Wembley

Yet still being booed by part of the crowd

That contrast highlights the tension between fan perception and internal team dynamics.

What happens next?

  • England squad clearly united behind White
  • Pressure growing for him to explain past events
  • Performances on the pitch could shift fan opinion

For now, the message from inside the camp is clear:

Ben White is supported — even if the fans are divided.
