French Star Boisson’s Wimbledon Dream Ends in Qualifying

French Star Boisson Has Wimbledon Hopes Ended in Qualifying Round

Lois Boisson, the breakout star of Roland Garros 2025, has seen her Wimbledon dream cut short after a first-round qualifying loss to Canada’s Carson Branstine.

The 22-year-old French sensation, who surged to world No. 65 after a fairy-tale run to the French Open semi-finals as a wildcard ranked 361st, fell 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4 on the opening day of Wimbledon qualifying.

Despite her rapid rise, Boisson was ineligible for direct entry into the main draw because the rankings cut-off occurred before her rise, forcing her into the qualifiers.

Branstine Sets Up Emotional Clash with Andreescu

Branstine, ranked 197th in the world, will now face close friend and former doubles partner Bianca Andreescu in the second round.

Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, cruised past Laura Pigossi of Brazil with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The two Canadians lifted the Australian Open girls’ doubles title in 2017, and Wednesday will mark their first-ever head-to-head in senior singles.

“I love that girl,” Branstine said of Andreescu. “She has one of the best hearts on tour, and I’m so blessed to call her one of my best friends.”

Mixed Results for British Hopes in Qualifying

Several British players were in action during the opening round of qualifying:

Emily Appleton battled from a set down to beat Simona Waltert 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3. She will face Barbora Palicova next.

Amarni Banks also advanced, defeating Julia Grabher 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

❌ However, there were early exits for six other Britons:

  • Katie Swan lost two tight tie-break sets to Leyre Romero Gormaz (7-6, 7-6)

  • Yuriko Miyazaki fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Oksana Selekhmeteva

  • Ella McDonald was beaten 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 by Darja Semenistaja

  • Ranah Akua Stoiber lost to Katarzyna Kawa 5-7, 6-4, 6-1

  • Amelia Rajecki was edged out in two tie-break sets by Iryna Shymanovich (7-6, 7-6)

  • Katy Dunne was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Alizé Cornet, who recently came out of retirement

Countdown to Wimbledon 2025

With the main draw of Wimbledon 2025 starting on 30 June, qualifying rounds this week are crucial for lower-ranked players chasing a place at tennis’ most prestigious Grand Slam.

Boisson’s early exit is a setback after her Paris heroics, but the young Frenchwoman has already proven she belongs on the sport’s biggest stages.
