Brobbey secures points as Sunderland deepen Palace turmoil

Brian Brobbey netted a classy second-half winner as Sunderland came from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, ending their five-match winless run and adding to a turbulent week for the visitors.

The Black Cats fell behind in the first half when Yeremy Pino capitalised on a poor clearance to delicately chip Robin Roefs after Will Hughes’ corner sparked chaos in the box.

But Palace’s lead evaporated just three minutes later when Enzo le Fee swept home Nordi Mukiele’s low cross to level the contest with a pinpoint finish.

The hosts took control after the interval, and their pressure paid off when Brobbey muscled past his marker and fired a composed strike off the underside of the bar – his fourth league goal of the season.

It could’ve been more, but Trai Hume missed a golden chance to make it 3-1, blazing over from close range.

The victory sees Sunderland equal Ipswich Town’s 11-match unbeaten home record by a newly promoted Premier League side (set in 1992-93). More impressively, Regis Le Bris’ team have now won 16 points from losing positions this season – more than any other promoted team since West Brom in 2010-11.

Sunderland are just three points off fourth-placed Liverpool, and fans are beginning to dream of more than just Premier League survival.

Palace woes grow amid week from hell

For Oliver Glasner, this result caps a dreadful week. Palace were knocked out of the FA Cup by sixth-tier Macclesfield, saw captain Marc Guehi set to leave for Manchester City, and heard Glasner confirm he will exit the club at the end of the season.

While Pino’s opener was a bright spark, Palace faded fast. They registered just two shots on target all game and were second-best after Sunderland equalised.

Jean-Philippe Mateta had chances to restore Palace’s lead but was denied twice by Roefs and once by the offside flag. A stunning half-volley was also chalked off.

Glasner’s side are now winless in 10 straight matches, and defeat to Chelsea next weekend could plunge the South London club deeper into the bottom half.

What’s next?

  • Sunderland face West Ham away on Saturday, 24 January (12:30 GMT).

  • Crystal Palace return to Selhurst Park for a London derby against Chelsea on Sunday, 25 January (14:00 GMT).
