Jordan & Kobe Signed Card Sets Record $12.9m Sale

A rare basketball card signed by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant has sold for a record-breaking $12.9m (£9.56m) at auction, making it the most expensive sports collectible card in history.

The ‘Holy Grail’ of Modern Basketball Cards

The 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs Jordan & Bryant card was sold by Heritage Auctions in the United States after more than a decade in private hands.

The card, regarded by collectors as a “holy grail,” went to auction with a pre-sale estimate of around $6m but attracted 82 bids, eventually more than doubling expectations.

“This is the pinnacle for modern card collectors,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports auctions. “Another one can’t be created.”

Breaking Records

The sale surpasses the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, which sold for $12.6m in 2022, though exchange rates at the time made that slightly more expensive in pounds sterling.

The Jordan-Bryant card now sits as the second most expensive sports collectible ever, behind Babe Ruth’s 1932 World Series “called shot” jersey, which fetched $24.12m in August 2024.

Two NBA Legends Immortalised

Jordan, widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time, won six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls between 1991 and 1998. Bryant, who tragically died in a helicopter crash in 2020, spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers, securing five NBA championships from 1996 to 2016.

Both players’ legacies helped fuel the frenzied bidding for this unique collectible, which will likely remain one of the rarest and most valuable pieces in basketball history.
