Onana considers Trabzonspor loan move from Man Utd
Man Utd Keeper Andre Onana Weighing Trabzonspor Loan Switch
Manchester United’s under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana is considering a loan move to Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor as his uncertain future at Old Trafford continues.
Having been previously linked with Galatasaray, that path closed when the Istanbul giants signed Ugurcan Cakir from Trabzonspor on 2 September in a deal that could rise to €36m (£31.2m). Now, Trabzonspor are seeking a high-profile replacement, and club sources believe Onana could make a significant impact.
Turkish Transfer Window Still Open
With the Turkish transfer window remaining open until 12 September, the move remains feasible even after most European markets have closed. Onana is currently on international duty with Cameroon, but talks are expected to progress in the coming days.
The 29-year-old joined United from Inter Milan for £47.2m in 2023, reuniting with former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag. However, his time in Manchester has been far from smooth.
Onana’s Rocky Spell at United
Onana began last season as United’s number one and played in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, but a hamstring injury during pre-season disrupted his momentum. He missed all warm-up matches and was overlooked for the club’s opening Premier League games, with Altay Bayindir preferred instead.
A return in the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town proved disastrous as he was at fault for one of the goals. This continued a pattern of unconvincing performances, eventually seeing him dropped for the April 13 Premier League loss to Newcastle.
Though recalled for the wild 5-4 Europa League win over Lyon, Onana has never fully settled, and his arrival—meant to replace long-standing club icon David de Gea—has come under intense scrutiny.
United Goalkeeper Puzzle
United’s goalkeeper situation remains crowded. The club recently signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day, adding to a roster that already includes Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Tom Heaton.
While club officials had insisted they were comfortable with carrying four senior keepers, new head coach Ruben Amorim has emphasized a preference for a leaner squad in light of United’s absence from European competitions.
Letting either Onana or Bayindir leave has been considered internally—and now, Trabzonspor may offer the escape route that Onana needs.
