PSG Ordered to Pay Mbappe €60M Over Contract Dispute

Paris St-Germain have been ordered by a French labour court to pay Kylian Mbappe €60 million (£52.5m) in unpaid salary and bonuses, marking a dramatic turn in the long-running contractual dispute between the club and their former star striker.

What Was the Court’s Decision?

  • The ruling found PSG failed to pay:

    • Three months’ salary (April–June 2024)

    • A due ethics bonus

    • A final installment of his signing bonus

  • The court rejected PSG’s €240m countersuit and dismissed Mbappe’s larger claim of €263m.

“This judgement confirms that commitments must be honoured,” said Mbappe’s legal team, adding that labour law applies even in professional football.

What Did PSG and Mbappe Say?

  • Mbappe’s lawyer, Frederique Cassereau, expressed satisfaction, calling the ruling an “expected outcome” when wages go unpaid.

  • PSG acknowledged the court’s decision and will comply but reserve the right to appeal.

  • The club insisted it had always acted in good faith and with integrity, adding it was time to “look to the future”.

Background: A Two-Year Fallout

This court ruling is the latest chapter in a bitter two-year fallout between Mbappe and PSG, which began when the striker refused to sign a contract extension and declined a €300m move to Al-Hilal in 2023.

  • Mbappe claimed ill-treatment:

    • Excluded from pre-season tour in Asia

    • Missed the opening match of the 2023–24 campaign

    • Accused PSG of forcing him to forgo contractual bonuses

  • PSG claimed Mbappe verbally agreed to sacrifice certain payments, which his representatives strongly denied.

Financial Impact on PSG

  • In May 2024, a €55m sum was frozen in PSG’s accounts upon request from Mbappe’s legal team.

  • Tuesday’s ruling includes:

    • €60m payout

    • Mandatory public notice: PSG must publish the court ruling on their homepage for one month

Mbappe’s PSG Legacy

Despite the off-pitch tension, Mbappe remains PSG’s all-time top scorer, with:

  • 256 goals in 308 appearances

  • 15 major trophies (including multiple Ligue 1 titles)

  • 44 goals in his final season (2023–24)

He joined Real Madrid in summer 2024 on a free transfer, after seven years in Paris.

What’s Next?

PSG may appeal, but are expected to pay the €60m as ordered. The case is seen as a landmark moment in contractual transparency in professional football, especially as labour courts increasingly enforce player rights.

Mbappe, now at Real Madrid, remains silent publicly but his legal team stated:

“Mr Mbappe scrupulously respected his obligations. This judgement restores that truth.”
