Fleetwood targets home glory after US breakthrough

Tommy Fleetwood Eyes Wentworth Glory and Ryder Cup Momentum

Fresh off his long-awaited first PGA Tour victory, Tommy Fleetwood returns to action this week at the BMW PGA Championship, setting his sights on a first top-tier win on home soil — and with it, a springboard into the upcoming Ryder Cup.

The 34-year-old Englishman, who clinched a dramatic victory at last month’s Tour Championship in Atlanta, admits he’s grateful to be “back at work” after soaking in an outpouring of support that included messages from Tiger Woods, LeBron James, and Caitlin Clark.

“Winning’s great, but it’s only as great as the people you share it with,” Fleetwood said. “The support meant more to me than any win.”

Back Home at Wentworth

The BMW PGA Championship — the flagship event of the DP World Tour — holds extra importance for Fleetwood, who is looking to build on a stellar 2025 season that has included eight top-10 finishes, capped by that career-defining win in Atlanta.

“This week’s a big week for me,” he said. “I’ve never truly been in contention at Wentworth coming down the stretch on Sunday. I would love to be in that position and feel the home crowd roar.”

Fleetwood, who sits 94th in the Race to Dubai standings due to his US-based schedule, could make a major leap with a strong showing this week.

$10m Win, But Family First

Despite the $10m (£7.4m) cheque he took home from Atlanta, Fleetwood was quick to highlight the absence of his family due to personal circumstances.

His wife Clare and stepson Murray missed the Tour Championship because Murray was recovering from spinal surgery.

“He had three and a half weeks in hospital… but he’ll be at Wentworth this week. That means everything to me.”

Ryder Cup on the Horizon

Fleetwood, preparing for his fourth Ryder Cup appearance, is also keeping one eye on Bethpage, where Team Europe will attempt to defend the title in hostile New York territory.

“This is what we dreamt of as kids,” he said. “I hope the US fans don’t dislike me too much for a week. But I’m really excited to experience the crowd there.”

The European team has a practice trip planned this weekend, after which focus shifts fully to the Ryder Cup showdown later in September.

A Breakout Year — But Not Done Yet

Fleetwood’s breakthrough win in his 164th PGA Tour start has been the highlight of a transformative year, but he’s determined to stay focused.

“You learn from the losses — and from the wins. I took a few days to enjoy it, but then I wanted to get back to work. There’s still so much more to come.”

Fleetwood’s only previous professional wins in England came at the Formby Hall Classic (2011) and British Par-three Championship (2013) — both minor events.

With form, family support, and Ryder Cup motivation on his side, Wentworth could mark the site of another major milestone.
