Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool: Thunderous Night in Istanbul as Reds Fall Again
Liverpool’s recent struggles continued in Europe as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray at the electrifying RAMS Park in Istanbul, capping a difficult few days following their Premier League loss to Crystal Palace.
Victor Osimhen’s early penalty was enough to hand the Turkish giants a famous win, with Liverpool unable to respond despite introducing Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak in the second half.
Osimhen Strikes Early, Alisson Injured
The hosts struck in the 16th minute after Dominik Szoboszlai was controversially judged to have fouled Baris Alper Yilmaz. Referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot and Osimhen calmly converted, just seconds after Davinson Sanchez had cleared a Cody Gakpo effort off the line.
To make matters worse for Liverpool, goalkeeper Alisson Becker was forced off injured after pulling off a fantastic save from Osimhen early in the second half.
Salah’s Late Introduction Not Enough
Head coach Arne Slot opted to start without Salah, perhaps with one eye on Saturday’s clash with Chelsea. But the decision backfired.
-
Salah and Isak were introduced around the 63rd minute, but Liverpool struggled to break down a determined Galatasaray defence.
-
Liverpool thought they had a lifeline when Ibrahima Konate won a penalty late on, but VAR overturned the decision.
Liverpool’s Defensive Fragility Re-emerges
This was the second consecutive defeat for the Premier League leaders, whose defensive vulnerabilities were again exposed:
-
Yilmaz’s pace troubled Liverpool early, with Alisson forced into multiple saves.
-
£116m signing Florian Wirtz was largely anonymous in midfield.
-
Despite dominating possession, Liverpool created few clear-cut chances and failed to match the intensity of the hosts.
“We lacked control and sharpness in key areas,” admitted Slot. “It’s a disappointing night, especially with Alisson’s injury.”
RAMS Park: A Cauldron of Noise
The RAMS Park crowd played a pivotal role in Galatasaray’s triumph:
-
Deafening whistles met every Liverpool touch.
-
Hysteria erupted after the Osimhen goal and again when VAR overturned the late penalty.
-
Though not quite the infamous “Welcome to Hell” of Ali Sami Yen days, the atmosphere was pure sporting theatre.
What It Means
-
Galatasaray climb the Group C table, putting pressure on Liverpool in the race for qualification.
-
Liverpool remain in a strong position domestically but will need a response when they face Chelsea on Saturday.
