Coco Gauff Stunned in First Round as Top Seeds Fall at Wimbledon 2025

Wimbledon 2025 saw a day of upsets, with Coco Gauff, the second seed and French Open champion, falling in the first round to Dayana Yastremska. The American was defeated 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 by the unseeded Ukrainian, leaving fans shocked at Court One.

Gauff, 21, was expected to make a deep run after her Roland Garros triumph just weeks ago, but a string of double faults and unforced errors handed Yastremska a rare opportunity to cause an upset.

A Disappointing Performance for Gauff

Despite her confidence following a Roland Garros title, Gauff struggled on grass. Her performance was marked by inconsistency, with nine double faults and 29 unforced errors. Her mistakes allowed Yastremska to break her serve multiple times in the second set and cruise to victory.

Since her French Open win, Gauff had only played one match, a first-round loss to Wang Xinyu at the Berlin Open, where she faced similar struggles. Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where Gauff has not reached the last eight.

Top Seeds Crash Out

Gauff’s exit was not the only shock of the day. Jessica Pegula, the third seed, also suffered a first-round exit, losing 6-2, 6-3 to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 116th. Pegula, who had her right knee heavily strapped, called it her “worst result of the year.”

She admitted, “It’s all about having everything come together for two weeks, and sometimes it doesn’t quite align when you need it to.”

Pegula’s early exit marks her worst Grand Slam result since the 2020 French Open, as she continues to struggle in major tournaments.

Zheng Falls to Grass-Court Expert Siniakova

Zheng Qinwen, the fifth seed, also bowed out in the first round, suffering a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 loss to Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova, a three-time Wimbledon women’s doubles champion, used her superior grass-court skills to knock Zheng out for the third consecutive year at this stage of the tournament.

Other Results

Despite the upsets, some top seeds advanced. Iga Swiatek, the eighth seed, secured a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Polina Kudermetova, and Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, triumphed 6-2, 6-1 against Elina Avanesyan. Teenager Mirra Andreeva also impressed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mayar Sherif.
