Guardiola ‘So Scared’ by Gaza War in Emotional University Speech

Pep Guardiola has spoken out about the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, saying he feels “so scared” and “deeply pained” by the destruction and loss of life.

The Manchester City manager, who was receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester, made the comments during a heartfelt address on Monday. His words come 20 months after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, following the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and 251 taken hostage.

Since then, over 54,800 people have reportedly died in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

“It’s so painful what we see in Gaza. It hurts my whole body,” said Guardiola.

“It’s not about ideology. It’s about the love of life and care for your neighbour.”

A Personal and Political Message

Guardiola, 54, referenced the suffering of children and expressed fear for the future:

“We see four-year-old kids being killed, and maybe we think, ‘It’s not our business.’ But be careful. The next one will be ours.”

He emotionally referred to his own children — Maria, Marius, and Valentina — when imagining the suffering of Palestinian children.

The Catalan coach, known for his pro-Catalan independence stance, has previously spoken on political matters. In 2018, he was fined £20,000 by the FA for wearing a yellow ribbon in support of imprisoned Catalan politicians.

Guardiola’s Message of Hope

Despite the grim tone, Guardiola offered a parable of perseverance:

“A bird carries drops of water to a burning forest. The snake laughs and says it won’t make a difference. The bird replies: ‘I’m just doing my part.’”

This story, Guardiola said, illustrates that even small actions matter in the face of massive crises. He extended his concern to other global conflicts, including Ukraine and Sudan.

Football’s Voice on Gaza

Guardiola joins a growing number of football figures who have addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict:

  • Mohamed Salah urged world leaders in October 2023 to “stop the slaughter of innocent souls.”

  • Anwar El Ghazi, now with Cardiff City, had his contract terminated by Mainz for a pro-Palestine post, later donating €500,000 to aid children in Gaza.

  • The FA faced backlash for not illuminating Wembley Stadium’s arch during England’s friendly against Australia in the early weeks of the conflict.

Guardiola’s remarks arrive amid his continued success at Manchester City, having won 18 trophies in nine years. His Guardiola Sala Foundation also supports disadvantaged communities, further underlining the values he voiced during his speech.
