Henderson Pays Emotional Jota Tribute After First Goal in Four Years
Henderson Honors Late Friend Jota with Emotional Goal Celebration
Jordan Henderson marked his return to the Premier League scoresheet with an emotional tribute to his late friend and former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, as Brentford drew 1-1 with Leeds United on Sunday.
The 35-year-old midfielder opened the scoring at the Gtech Community Stadium, netting his first league goal in over four years — his last coming in a 4-1 Merseyside derby win over Everton in December 2021.
A Gesture of Friendship: Henderson’s Jota Celebration
After seeing his low shot deflect off Leeds defender Jaka Bijol into the net, Henderson sat down and mimicked playing a video game, replicating Jota’s trademark celebration — a subtle but powerful tribute.
“It was his birthday recently,” Henderson told Sky Sports.
“We will never forget him. I can only imagine what the lads at Liverpool are going through.”
“He was a good friend… I don’t score many goals so I thought I would dedicate it to him.”
Remembering Jota

Jordan Henderson mirrored Diogo Jota’s celebration after scoring against Leeds
Diogo Jota, the Portugal international, tragically passed away in a car crash in July, aged just 28, along with his brother Andre Silva.
Henderson, visibly emotional, had laid flowers outside Anfield the day after Jota’s death and later shared on Instagram:
“It was a pleasure to share a pitch with you, but more importantly, a friendship.”
The two shared memorable moments on the pitch, including lifting the 2022 FA Cup with Liverpool after a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley.
Henderson’s Journey Back to England
Henderson’s road to this moment has been filled with change:
-
Left Liverpool in July 2023 for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq
-
Moved to Ajax in January 2024
-
Terminated his contract early in the summer
-
Signed with Brentford, returning to the Premier League
Now, at 35 years and 180 days, he becomes Brentford’s oldest Premier League goalscorer.
Brentford Boss Praises Henderson’s Impact
Brentford manager Keith Andrews praised Henderson’s presence and performance:
“Jordan’s experience and knowledge of the game is second to none.”
“He’s been an impactful player for us. He’s settled in really well, and long may it continue.”
