Gattuso Named Italy Head Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Italy Name World Cup Winner Gattuso as Manager

Gennaro Gattuso, a 2006 World Cup champion and AC Milan icon, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Italian national team, succeeding Luciano Spalletti after a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 47-year-old, who earned 73 caps for the Azzurri, will lead Italy into the 2026 World Cup, two decades after lifting the trophy as a player in Germany.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating Gattuso will be formally presented to the media on Thursday.

Spalletti Departs After Norway Defeat

Spalletti’s exit comes on the heels of a 3-0 defeat to Norway on 6 June, which ended Italy’s hopes of qualifying directly for the 2026 tournament. Italy had already failed to qualify for the past two World Cups, despite winning Euro 2020.

Speaking last week, Spalletti said:

“It was clear from the results and the mood in the dressing room that something needed to change.”

Gravina: ‘Gattuso Is a Symbol of Italian Football’

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina praised the appointment:

“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivation, professionalism and experience will be fundamental.”

Gattuso’s Coaching Journey

After a glittering playing career, including two Champions League titles and two Serie A wins with AC Milan, Gattuso has had a volatile managerial career. Italy will be his 10th coaching job in 12 years, including stints at:

  • Pisa – Led the club to promotion to Serie B in 2016

  • OFI Crete – Resigned after internal financial disputes

  • Napoli – Won Coppa Italia in 2020

  • Valencia – Short-lived spell in La Liga

  • Fiorentina – Appointed in 2021 but left before officially starting

Despite his passion and tactical discipline, Gattuso’s tenures have often been short and stormy.

Looking Ahead: Italy in Transition

Gattuso’s first major task will be restoring Italy’s international credibility after back-to-back World Cup absences. The team faces a crucial rebuilding phase with many key players from the Euro 2020-winning squad now retired or aging.

He will also oversee Italy’s involvement in the upcoming Nations League and Euro 2028 qualifiers, laying the groundwork for a potential return to the global stage.
