Italy Edge Closer to Historic Davis Cup Three-Peat
Berrettini and Cobolli Lead Italy Past Austria in Davis Cup Quarters
Italy advanced to the semi-finals of the Davis Cup Finals with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Austria, taking another step toward a historic third consecutive Davis Cup title.
Even without top-ranked stars Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the defending champions displayed dominant form in Bologna, extending their Davis Cup Finals winning streak to 12 ties.
Clinical Singles Performances Seal the Tie
Matteo Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist and current world No. 56, kick-started the tie with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Austria’s Jurij Rodionov. After taking the first set with a single break, Berrettini showed grit in the second, saving three set points to force a tiebreak.
“When I play for my country, I just think about winning the next point,” said Berrettini. “Representing Italy is something so special.”
Flavio Cobolli, ranked 22nd in the world and a 2025 Wimbledon quarter-finalist, followed up with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory against Austria’s top player Filip Misolic. The 23-year-old broke serve three times in the opening set and controlled the tempo throughout.
“We all want to win this cup. I felt the bench behind me, and that support is indescribable,” Cobolli said post-match.
12-Tie Streak, Belgium Awaits
Italy will face Belgium in Friday’s semi-final after the Belgians defeated France earlier this week. The Italians are aiming to become the first nation to win three straight Davis Cup titles since 1972.
Meanwhile, in the other half of the draw, Spain meet the Czech Republic, followed by Argentina versus Germany, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the 2025 Finals.
What’s Next
Despite missing Sinner and Musetti, Italy’s depth continues to shine, and Berrettini and Cobolli look poised to carry the momentum forward. A victory over Belgium would put Italy one win away from Davis Cup history.
