Yet in football, “never say never” often proves to be the most accurate phrase. Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister recently suggested that a second spell for Klopp at Anfield cannot be completely ruled out — especially in a sport where situations change quickly.
For supporters who watched Klopp transform Liverpool into one of Europe’s most feared sides, even the faint possibility of a return is enough to spark imagination.

Gary McAllister, who worked closely with Klopp during his time as part of Liverpool’s coaching staff, believes a return cannot be completely dismissed.
Speaking about the idea, McAllister highlighted the unique chemistry Klopp built with supporters both in Germany and England.
“You can never say never in football,” he explained.
McAllister recalled watching Klopp manage Borussia Dortmund and noticing how naturally he connected with the famous “Yellow Wall” at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund, like Liverpool, is a working-class city where football carries deep emotional meaning.
“When you watched him at Dortmund, you could see the connection,” McAllister said. “The city, the fans, the atmosphere — he was perfect for that environment.”
The same thing happened when Klopp arrived at Liverpool.
“It felt like the perfect storm,” McAllister continued. “You had a charismatic leader with a huge personality who understood exactly how the fans felt. The Kop is very similar to Dortmund’s Yellow Wall. He connected with that energy.”
That connection is part of the reason Klopp’s legacy remains so powerful at Anfield.
The Risks of Returning to a Former Club
While the emotional pull might exist, returning to a club where a manager has already achieved enormous success can be complicated.
History in football shows that second spells rarely recreate the magic of the first. Expectations are higher, memories are stronger, and circumstances often change.
McAllister acknowledged that reality.
“It’s always difficult to go back somewhere where you’ve already been unbelievably successful,” he said.
Yet the unpredictable nature of football keeps the door slightly open.
“This game is crazy, and it’s getting crazier all the time,” he added. “So you really can’t rule anything out.”
For McAllister, though, the bigger point is that the sport itself feels different without Klopp on the touchline.
“Football in general misses Jurgen Klopp,” he said.
What Would Need to Happen for a Klopp Return?
For Klopp to return to Liverpool, several circumstances would likely need to align.
First, the managerial position would need to become available.
Currently, Liverpool are led by Dutch coach Arne Slot, who took over following Klopp’s departure. Slot signed a contract running until 2027 and was expected to build on the strong foundation Klopp left behind.
However, football rarely follows long-term plans exactly as expected.
Liverpool’s performances this season have been inconsistent, particularly in their attempt to defend the Premier League title. Despite a massive transfer window in the summer of 2025, the team has struggled to maintain the same intensity that defined Klopp’s sides.
If Liverpool were to miss out on Champions League qualification or fail to win major silverware, pressure could mount on the current coaching staff.
Only in that kind of scenario would discussions about a new manager begin.
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore believes Klopp would instantly become the ideal candidate if he were available.
“If he’s available, you’d take him all day long,” Collymore once said when discussing the possibility.
But Collymore also noted that any return would likely need to be initiated by Klopp himself.
“If Jurgen Klopp said, ‘I’m coming back to football and Liverpool is the only club for me,’ then of course the Liverpool board would listen,” he explained.
However, if Klopp simply announced a general return to coaching and wanted a new challenge elsewhere, Liverpool might not actively pursue him.
