Kane Scores as Bayern Become First Team to Reach Club World Cup Knockouts
Harry Kane continued his fine form as Bayern Munich edged Boca Juniors 2-1 to become the first team to qualify for the Club World Cup knockout stages.
Kane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, calmly finishing from 10 yards. After Miguel Merentiel equalised with a stunning effort, Kane turned provider, setting up Michael Olise for the winner with six minutes to go.
Kane Delivers Again
The England captain was named Superior Player of the Match for his influential display in New Jersey.
“It is a massive tournament, playing against the best teams in the world,” Kane told Dazn.
“But it is us against us, that is the mindset and we have to compete at our best level. So far, so good.”
With two direct goal contributions, Kane has now been involved in four goals in two matches, proving vital to Vincent Kompany’s squad.
Olise Strikes Winner
Former Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise showed composure to secure the win, side-footing past the keeper from the edge of the area after a clever assist by Kane.
A draw against Benfica in their final group game would be enough for Bayern to finish top and potentially face Chelsea in the last 16—if the Blues finish second in their group.
Musiala Injury Concern
Despite the win, Bayern’s night was marred by the injury to Jamal Musiala, who limped off just 25 minutes after coming on. The Germany international’s condition will be assessed ahead of the knockout phase.
Group Outlook
Boca Juniors’ loss ended a nine-match unbeaten streak for South American sides in this new Club World Cup format. However, they still have a mathematical chance to qualify—if Benfica lose and a seven-goal swing occurs.
In the group’s other match, Benfica thrashed Auckland City 6-0, eliminating the New Zealand side, who have conceded 16 goals in two games.
