Lamine Yamal Investigated Over Dwarfism Controversy at Birthday Party
Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has asked prosecutors to investigate Barcelona star Lamine Yamal after reports emerged that he hired entertainers with dwarfism for his 18th birthday celebration.
The party, held on Sunday at a rented property in Olivella near Barcelona, featured guests including influencers, YouTubers, and several of Yamal’s Barcelona teammates.
ADEE Files Legal Complaint
The Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) described Yamal’s actions as “unacceptable in the 21st century.”
The Ministry of Social Rights confirmed to BBC Sport:
“ADEE has filed a legal complaint. This Directorate General has requested the Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any laws or disability rights have been violated.”
ADEE argues that hiring people with dwarfism for entertainment perpetuates harmful stereotypes and violates Spanish legislation protecting the dignity of people with disabilities.
“Shows or recreational activities using people with disabilities to provoke ridicule are expressly prohibited,” ADEE said in a statement.
Entertainer Defends Yamal
In contrast, Spanish radio station RAC1 interviewed one of the entertainers present at the party, who defended Yamal.
“No-one disrespected us. We worked in peace. We’re normal people who do what we want, and we know our limits,” said the anonymous performer.
They described the event as lasting one hour, involving dancing, distributing drinks, and magic tricks, adding:
“Why can’t we do it because of our physical condition? Everyone had a great time.”
Barcelona Yet to Comment
Barcelona said it would not comment on what it considers a private matter but may reassess its position once “concrete information” emerges.
The investigation is ongoing as Spain examines whether Yamal’s actions breached disability rights laws.
