Liverpool Honour Late Diogo Jota and Andre Silva with Emotional Anfield Tribute

Liverpool paid a moving tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva during their opening Premier League match of the season against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night.

With Jota’s family present, the evening began with a powerful rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, followed by a moment of silence. Fans in the Kop and Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand held up a mosaic reading DJ20 and AS30 in tribute.

Remembering a Club Favourite

Jota, 28, died in a car accident in northern Spain in July alongside his brother Andre Silva, 25. The Liverpool forward had worn the number 20 shirt, and the crowd sang his chant — “Oh he wears the number 20” — both as the players walked onto the pitch and again in the 20th minute.

A large flag in the Kop displayed the message: “Anfield will always be your home.”

In his match programme notes, Liverpool boss Arne Slot wrote:

“We know this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre… we will come together to honour them once more.”

Tributes Across the Premier League

The Premier League confirmed a moment of silence will be held before all fixtures this weekend, with players wearing black armbands and tribute messages shown on stadium screens.

Liverpool’s players will also wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts and jackets for the entire season.

Jota’s number 20 shirt has been officially retired following discussions with his wife, Rute Cardoso, and family members.

Legacy Beyond Liverpool

Jota played a key role in Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season. His former club Wolves will also hold their own tribute ahead of their Premier League opener against Manchester City on Saturday.
