Liverpool Remember Diogo Jota Before First Anfield Game

Liverpool FC paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield during their first home match since the forward’s tragic death in a car crash in July.

The 28-year-old Portuguese international and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were both killed in a car accident in Spain, sending shockwaves throughout the football world.

As part of a pre-season double header against Athletic Bilbao, Liverpool held two friendlies on Monday, kicking off at 17:00 and 20:00 BST.

Before the opening match, club legend Phil Thomson and Athletic president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths at the edge of the six-yard box. Surrounding Anfield’s LED boards displayed the message:

“Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Flags, Applause and a Retired Number

Fans paid tribute throughout the evening, waving flags and banners in memory of their beloved number 20.

In a poignant gesture, Liverpool officially retired Jota’s shirt number, underlining the club’s desire to honor his legacy permanently.

Both matches were paused in the 20th minute as players, coaches, and fans rose to applaud the fallen forward in unison.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and went on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances, playing a key role in the club’s recent success, including Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles.

Slot: “We Will Always Carry Him With Us”

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot reflected on Jota’s memory in his pre-match programme notes.

“It has been a tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo’s family, his wife, his children and friends,” Slot wrote.

“We cannot imagine the pain they have been going through. The club will continue to give them all the support they need going forward.”

“We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.”

Slot also thanked the football community for their overwhelming support since the tragedy.

Looking Ahead

Liverpool now turn their attention to the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday, 10 August at Wembley, followed by the Premier League opener at Anfield against Bournemouth on Friday, 15 August.

As they move forward, the memory of Diogo Jota will remain at the heart of Liverpool Football Club.
